Prepare the stable by thoroughly cleaning then empty several bags of pellets and spread across the floor to a depth of approximately 2 inches. This will provide comfort and absorbency that traps wets spots and prevents ammonia spreading in the stable. If your horse has a preferred ‘toilet’ spot, you can add extra depth here.

Pellets can also be used with rubber matting and the amount you will need depends on the size of your stable.

As a guide, we recommend using 8 to 10 bags for a 12ft x 12ft stable and adding 2 to 3 extra bags if you want to create deeper areas.

To make the pellets fluffy and break down the resin sheen, moisten the pellets with enough water to initiate their opening (2 – 3 gallons). Within 20 minutes the bedding will expand up to four times their original size and will continue to grow over the next few days, becoming softer. The amount of water you need to add will depend on how many pellets are used and overall humidity of the stable.

When mucking out, simply remove any saturated or soiled areas and top up fresh pellets to maintain around 4 inches of bedding.

Using too much bedding could cause mould or ammonia build up so begin by using less, you can always add more if needed. Make sure the stable is well ventilated and kept clean and dry.
