Q Do I need to have my chimney swept regularly?
The way in which we use our stoves can have a big impact on air quality and how long the chimney and wood burner will last. A local professional sweep can help you get it right, ensuring that you get the most from your stoves and provide advice on optimum operation. This can help save money.

Q What is the best wood to use in a log burner?
A Both hard and softwood can be burned on a log burner, the main point is that they should all have less than 20% moisture content. Hardwoods can last longer but are more expensive than softwoods, it is a matter of preference to the user.

Q What should you not burn?
A Do not burn driftwood as this has high levels of salt, and when the chlorine in the salt that can release toxic chemicals when burned. You should also not burn painted or treated timbers.

Q Is it okay to burn bark on a wood stove?
A There is nothing wrong with burning pieces of wood with bark still attached.

Q Can i burn my Conifers, Willows, Poplars, & Softwood?
A These are all acceptable to burn if they have less than 20% moisture content.

Q Can i burn my old fence posts?
A Fence posts have generally been treated to help them last longer, the treatment will contain harmful chemicals which would be expelled into the air should you burn these on your burner. NEVER burn this type of wood on your burners.

Q What other wood can I not burn?
A Painted or treated woods, if you are unsure of it’s origin please do not burn on your log stove, always work with reputable companies who sell wood with has less than 20% moisture.

Q Can i put wood with nails in my burner?
A In most cases burning wood with nails in is absolutely fine, we have come across a post which states they should not be burnt on a catalytic burner. A catalytic burner is usually installed and used as a primary source for heat, whereby there is a requirement for a continuous heat source, most are non-catalytic burners where they are used as a top up or intermittent heat source.

The nails will be captured with the residual ash within the burner and cleared out with the ash.

We have been contacted by a gentleman who regularly uses our off cuts and blocks, he actually weighs in the metal at a local scrap yard for some extra pocket money!

Q Is log burner cheaper than gas – 2022?
A We have found the information below although we have not carried out any comparison’s ourselves.

A wood burning stove can cost around a third of the price of electric central heating to run, whilst it’s about 13% cheaper than gas central heating, under the current energy price cap, according to the Stove Industry Alliance (SIA).

Q How do i make my logs burn slower?
A The speed at which your log burns is managed by airflow and the staking of materials within the burner. If you want to see a roaring flame then open up the air intake and vice versa for a low burn, restrict the flow and this will help how long the material lasts.

Q Can I burn my Christmas tree?
A Christmas trees contain a huge amount of sap and when they are dried out the needles ignite really fast. Christmas trees can be chipped for mulch which your garden will love or take to the nearest local council tip which normally provides a chipping service just after the Christmas period.

Q What happens if you do not season firewood?
A Wood burned inside the home should always be dry and seasoned for at least 12 months.

Wood burns more efficiently when the moisture content is less than 20% or less.

Damp wood burns at a cooler temperature resulting in incomplete combustion, more smoke and dangerous creosote build-up in the chimney which is a fire hazard.

Q Why is my firewood making a hissing noise?
A
Firewood that retains moisture above 20% may steam and hiss as the liquid heats up from the fire and escapes as steam.

When you have a bonfire, open fire in the garden often there are sparks and spitting from the fire, this is an indication that there could be too much moisture and once this is mixed with sap can cause vapours to expand rapidly and create the crackling noise we all know.

Q How often should I have my chimney swept?
A We would advise that you have your chimney swept at least twice per year. We cannot stress enough how important this is. It is vital that stoves are kept in optimum condition so that we can reduce as much as possible particles into the air. We all need to provide heat to our homes but we also have a responsibility to do everything in our power to help the environment as much as we can.
