Using Horse Pellets
- Start with an empty clean dry stable.
- In a standard 12×12 stable use approx. 5 bags of pellets to start off your bed. Place the bags on the floor in the middle of the stable floor and make a cut across the top of each bag. Add approx. ½ to 1 bucket of water to each bag.
- The pellets will now start to activate (‘fluff up’), this will take approx. 15-20 minutes.
- Once the pellets have ‘fluffed up’ empty the bags out and spread the bedding using a shavings fork. This will give you a nice dense bed for your horse.
Mucking out and Maintenance
- Daily muck outs are the easiest way to keep your pellet bed clean.
- Use a shavings fork (close pronged) to sieve out the droppings from the bed, this ensures very little bedding is removed keeping your waste to a minimum.
- Scrape back the top layer of bedding to expose the wet patch. This can be done daily or weekly depending on how ‘wet’ your horse is.
- Add 1 extra bag once a week to top up the bed. Again, soak the pellets in the same way you set up the bed. If your horse is very wet, you could add just half a bag of un-activated pellets to where the wet patch is.
- If you find your bed is too dry and becoming dusty, sprinkle a small amount of water on the top layer to maintain the moisture.
